Abyd Karmali

Managing Director and Global Head of Carbon Markets, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Abyd Karmali is Managing Director and Global Head of Carbon Markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He is the company’s point person for carbon business opportunities and serves on Bank of America’s Environment Council which steers the bank’s USD 50 billion environmental business initiative. Mr Karmali has worked for more than twenty years on climate change, carbon markets, and climate finance and also serves as elected President of the Climate Markets and Investment Association and banking representative on UNEP’s Climate Change Advisory Group. Over the past six years, his teams have won several awards from the Financial Times, Environmental Finance, and The Banker for innovative climate finance transactions such as CleanStar Mozambique and Nuru Energy. His voluntary sector activity includes chairing Just Energy, an Oxfam seeded social enterprise focused on energy access, and advising Conservation Strategy Fund, which is focused on enhancing natural capital such as biodiversity and ecosystem services. Karmali was previously employed with management consultants ICF International and the United Nations Environment Programme. He holds a MS in Technology and Policy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
